Ultrasonic Water Meters
Ultrasonic flow meters provide a non-invasive means of measuring flow through the use of sound waves to measure the speed of flow within a pipe. By using an ultrasonic flow meter, there is none of the disruption and downtime associated with needing to cut into the pipe, simply clamp on the meter to measure flow.
Doppler Ultrasonic Flow Meters utilise ‘The Doppler Effect’ which is the change in frequency of a wave as the source and the observer move toward or away from each other. This means that the frequencies of the source and the receiver are the same under no flow conditions. Under flowing conditions, there is a change in the frequency that is picked up by the receiver. When the flow is faster, the frequency shift is increased on a linear level.
Transit Time Ultrasonic Flow Meters send and receive waves upstream and downstream in a pipe and measures the time difference. At no flow, the time it takes for a wave to travel upstream and downstream is the same. When there is flow within the pipe, the time taken for the wave to travel in either direction changes. The wave travels slower upstream and travels faster upstream. As the flow moves faster in the pipe, the difference between the upstream and downstream times increases. The transmitter determines the flow rate by processing the upstream and downstream times.
